There's no place like home. At least that is what Javier Garcia Villagomez thought when he agreed to be transferred back to his home state of Mexico to serve the remainder of his state of Illinois Prison sentence.
At the time of his transfer, Mr. Villagomez was to be released from Illinois prison in June of 2004. Unfortunately, the Mexican prison authorities disagreed and changed his release date to June of 2024. That's right, twenty years after his expected release date.
Fortunately, Mr. Villagomez hired the Law Office of Michael J. Petro to get him out of jail. A federal habeas corpus petition was filed and in the process of being litigated in the U.S. District Court in Chicago. Further, Attorney Michael J. Petro negotiated with the U.S. Department of Justice's International Prison Transfer Unit and the Mexican authorities to secure Mr. Villagomez's rightful release from Mexican Prison.
The end result, Mr. Villagomez is a free man. On Monday, November 11, 2004, Mr. Villagomez was released Mexican Prison. Finally for Mr. Villagomez, there is no place like home.
