On June 2, 2003, Attorney Michael J. Petro successfully defended Tommy Payne on Drug Charges. Mr. Payne was facing six to thirty years in custody if convicted of the charge of possessing 40 grams of cocaine.
The suppression hearing and trial were held at Chicago's 26th and California Court House in front of Judge Marjorie Laws. After Mr. Petro's withering cross-examination of two Chicago Police Officers, Judge Laws found Mr. Payne innocent of the charges against him. In her ruling, the Judge stated that she did not find the police officers credible.
In a statement after the case, Mr. Payne stated that he was happy that the truth finally came out. With respect to Attorney Michael J. Petro's performance, Mr. Payne stated that he was "happy to have had such a good lawyer."
